“Freaky Friday” Plot
Whether you read the 1972 book by Mary Rodgers or have seen its 1976 or 2003 film adaptations — or know nothing about it! — “Freaky Friday” is an endearing tale of self-acceptance, love, and respect between a mother and daughter. When overworked mother Katherine and rebellious teenage daughter Ellie magically swap bodies, they only have one day to reverse whatever happened — Katherine’s wedding is the next day! What ensues is a hilarious adventure where the two reconnect and truly put themselves in the other’s shoes.
“Freaky Friday” History
We’ve already mentioned this, but this story got its legendary start with Mary Rodgers’ 1972 book and then grew in fame with both the 1976 and 2003 film adaptations. Music and lyrics for this Broadway show were created by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey and the book by Bridget Carpenter. In our San Diego musical production, co-directors and choreographers Katie Banville and Noelle Marion are joined by musical director Andrew Orbison.
From 1972 to 1976, 2003, and now 2019, “Freaky Friday” is a story that has withstood the test of time — and you could see it at San Diego Musical Theatre this month.
