Meet Shirley Johnston – SDMT New Academy Manager!
Meet Shirley Johnston – a San Diego based singer/dancer/actor/choreographer/director and dance teacher. She has been teaching tap, ballet, jazz and musical theatre dance for over 30 years in San Diego and New York City. Currently she teaches at Artifex in Motion and T3 Triple Threat San Diego.
She has Directed and Choreographed The Most Happy Fella, Pippin, Little Shop of Horrors and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
Over the years she has worked with San Diego Comic Opera, San Diego Lyric Opera, Bodhi Tree Concerts, Dicapo Opera (NYC), Point Loma Nazarene University, Canyon Crest Academy, Lamb’s Players Theatre, Coronado Playhouse, Sledgehammer Theatre, Vista’s Broadway Theater, San Diego Junior Theatre, Moxie Theatre, Lamplighter Theatre, Pickwick Players, Ocean Beach Playhouse, Onstage Playhouse, Moonlight Stage Productions, and Dicapo Opera in New York City.
Some of her favorite roles: Rosie “Bye Bye Birdie,” Brenda “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” Charlayne “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” Fortune Teller “Sideshow,” Bonnie “Anything Goes,” Charlotte “A Little Night Music,” Lucy “Avenue Q,” Cassie “A Chorus Line,” Medda Larkin “Newsies,” Mrs. Phelps in “Matilda” and The Witch in “Big Fish.”
Shirley shares her goals for SDMT Academy:
I am thrilled to join the SDMT team as their new Academy Manager.
I look forward to working with new and existing Academy students young and old, and utilizing my combined experience and instructional background to help all grow and achieve their Broadway Musical goals and aspirations!
