“Catch Me If You Can” is Donny Gersonde’s 10th SDMT Production!
San Diego Musical Theatre’s patrons and seasoned subscribers have seen the talented and infectiously positive Donny Gersonde on the SDMT Stage for many of their most favorite productions. Donny celebrates his 10th show milestone as Ensemble in “Catch Me If You Can”. Not only a fan favorite, Donny is also a SDMT Academy favorite instructor with his incredibly popular “Combo Pick-Up” classes!
We caught up with Donny to learn more about him!
Please share with us the names of all the SDMT productions you were in?
Let’s see if I can remember…LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, 42ND STREET, 9 TO 5, WHITE CHRISTMAS, BILLY ELLIOT, CRAZY FOR YOU, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, SISTER ACT, ALL SHOOK UP, and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!
What do you do when you are not on the stage?
I watch a lot of Rupaul’s Drag Race! But as far as work goes, I teach dance for Coronado School of the Arts, Coronado Middle School, The La Jolla Playhouse, Tap Fever Studios, The Dance Academy at Del Mar, SD Junior Theatre and SDMT Academy!
You have a successful combo pick-up class at SDMT Academy – what is your dance training?
I am a graduate of CoSA myself. Many people know Colleen Kollar-Smith who was my tap teacher in high school! I now follow in her footsteps and have her job! I also attended the Hartt School in Connecticut for my BFA.
What was the hardest role you’ve had to play for SDMT?
Hannah from Hamburg in La Cage! I had 4 costume changes in the opening number alone. 6 wigs throughout the entire show. AND I cracked a whip onstage. Many times, in thigh high boots. It was amazing…but it took a village to make me look good. Shout out to Janet and her amazing team of dressers!
What is your favorite role you’ve played for SDMT?
Easy….SUPAH DUPAH. The Monster in Young Frankenstein (shout out to Megan Pitcher who did my makeup for 2 1/2 hours EVERY SHOW)!
What is your dream role?
Shrek! Or Billy Bigelow! Anything big and barky!
You have performed at a lot of theaters, what did you think about the new SDMT Stage?
When Jill showed me the new space I was blown away. It’s truly incredible what this team has done with the space. From Michelle’s lighting grid, to everything Steve, Paul and Heather have built, it’s amazing!
What “Catch Me If You Can” is your favorite number?
I would have to say Jet Set, what those Stewardesses are doing with Xavier’s choreography is inspiring!
