San Diego Musical Theatre – Your local way to see Broadway Musicals

OUR HISTORY

San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT) was founded by Erin and Gary Lewis on September 26, 2006, as a professional, non-profit, musical theatre organization that produces Broadway musicals.

Erin and Gary grew up in San Diego where both of their families enjoyed attending local musical productions. When their daughter began performing at local theatres over 26 years ago, they soon discovered that they wanted to become more involved in San Diego’s theatrical community by volunteering their services, time, and resources.

Erin and Gary have owned and operated a successful Tupperware business for over 41 years and love what they do. After realizing in 2006 that San Diego could benefit from a local, year round, non-profit musical theatre organization, they decided that the time was right to add an exciting new adventure to their life — and San Diego Musical Theatre was born.

Founders Gary & Erin Lewis

San Diego Musical Theatre presented the Regional Premiere of The Full Monty at the North Park Theatre for their inaugural production. Following this, SDMT produced their first full season of live musicals at the East County Performing Arts Center.

After subsequent moves to the Lyceum Theatre and a return to the North Park Theatre, in 2015 SDMT was finally able to call the historic Spreckels Theatre their home.

In 2015, SDMT launched their “You Give, We Give” campaign, designed to raise awareness for local nonprofits. Every season, for each musical production, SDMT partners with a different local non-profit, where 10 percent of the funds raised by SDMT during the run will be given to the partner organization. Since 2015, SDMT has partnered with a variety of organizations including Junior Achievement, Special Olympics of California, Voices for Children, UCSD Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and many other wonderful non-profits. Through its “You Give, We Give” program, SDMT will continue to help raise funds and awareness for local organizations.

In December of 2016, SDMT entered into a partnership with Intrepid Theatre Company to share the use of Horton Grand Theatre in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp District. For its inaugural production at Horton Grand Theatre, SDMT presented the world premiere of Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Radio Play as a seasonal theatrical performance during the holidays.

During 2018 and 2019, all of SDMT’s live shows were performed at the Horton Grand Theatre. Looking ahead to that 2020 season, SDMT hopes to continue expanding their presence in the local theatre community and offer San Diego audiences live entertainment of the highest caliber.
