About SDMT

To passionately produce and provide professional musical theatre that ignites the human spirit…
San Diego Musical Theatre – Your local way to see Broadway

San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT) was founded by Erin and Gary Lewis on September 26, 2006, as a professional, non-profit, musical theatre organization that produces Broadway musicals.

Erin and Gary grew up in San Diego where both of their families enjoyed attending local productions. When their daughter began performing at local theatres, over 26 years ago, they soon discovered that they wanted to become more involved in the San Diego theatrical community and volunteered their services, time and resources.

Erin and Gary have owned and operated a successful Tupperware business for over 41 years and love what they do. After realizing that San Diego could benefit from a local, year round, non-profit musical theatre organization, in 2006 they decided that the time was right to add an exciting new adventure to their life … San Diego Musical Theatre was born.

The San Diego Regional Premiere of The Full Monty, performed at the North Park Theatre, was the inaugural production for SDMT. The Full Monty was an audience and critical success winning the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle award for Outstanding Musical Direction!

SDMT’s first full season began at the East County Performing Arts Center with productions of Guys and Dolls and Bye Bye Birdie and then they moved to the Lyceum Theatre for the final show of the season Dreamgirls. All shows were met with enthusiastic audiences, great reviews and Dreamgirls even won the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle award for Outstanding Musical for that year.

The second season of musicals, all at the Lyceum Theatre, began with Smokey Joe’s Café rocking the stage, followed by the San Diego Premiere of The Story Of My Life, the phenomenal A Chorus Line that played to sold out houses, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Next SDMT moved back to the North Park Theatre where they produced The Marvelous Wonderettes, RENT, Footloose, began their tradition of producing Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Chicago, The Sound of Music, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Cats, Annie Get Your Gun and Next To Normal.

Since 2015, SDMT has made the beautiful, historic Spreckels Theatre  in downtown San Diego its home. For its 2017 season, the company will offer an Off-Broadway series at the Horton Grand Theatre in addition to the Broadway series at the Spreckels which will make SDMT a year-round presence in the gaslamp district of San Diego.
